Your Instructors
Matt Doval has been dancing and studying Argentine tango since 2011 and teaching regularly since 2018. He is proficient in both lead and follow roles and works comfortably in close and open embrace. May Vang assists in Wednesday evening classes and often supports practices and special events. She has spent the last several years studying and dancing intensively, becoming proficient in both roles and an excellent partner for demonstrating clear, connected tango.
About the Dance
Tango is about expressing your individuality while staying deeply connected with another person. It honors each dancer’s uniqueness and the shared practice of movement together. Argentine tango is a rich social dance for creative expression, emotional presence, and genuine human connection.
Learning Focus
Our guiding principle is simple: be different from last week. We become what we practice, and our dancing reflects both our current state and our potential. Each class is designed to help you build new skills, refine your movement, and expand your comfort on the dance floor.
Class Format
- Dancers learn both lead and follow roles; partners can be of any gender
- We use partner rotations so you can dance with many people and adapt to different styles
- Learning both roles deepens your understanding of the dance and creates a more balanced, flexible community
Environment & Community
This is a safe, inclusive learning space where everyone is welcome. Respect for all dancers is essential. We dance human to human, cultivating deep, long-term connections that make Argentine tango so rewarding. By investing in these relationships, we set ourselves up to enjoy tango for many years to come.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes with smooth, non-sticky soles. Socks can work in a pinch, especially when you’re first getting started.
Practicing for Success
A tango class is more than a one-night-a-week activity. Your body and mind need repetition to change patterns and grow. For best results:
- Attend class each week
- Join the Thursday evening practice session to apply what you’ve learned with others
- Add at least three short solo or partnered practice sessions each week (about 30 minutes each)
Consistent practice outside of class accelerates your progress, deepens your enjoyment, and enriches the experience for both you and your partners. Set reminders, make time, and let tango become a meaningful part of your week.

Private Lessons
Individualized Instruction
Private lessons, tailored to your pace and focusing on connection and technique, are highly recommended as a supplement to weekly group lessons.
Group lessons and private lessons offer distinct advantages for learning Argentine tango. Individuals with budget constraints or apprehensions about their dancing skills may find group lessons with their peers more economical. Each dancer brings their own unique life experiences and physical abilities to the dance floor, creating a diverse group of people who are all trying to find common ground in a shared movement topic. Often, it’s the average dancer who learns the most, while the more experienced dancer doesn’t get much more, and the less experienced dancer struggles and hopes it gets easier.
Human bodies and nervous systems adapt to stimuli. Clear intentions about practice, how something should feel, and how it should be danced have a significant impact on outcomes. A one-hour intensive with a skilled instructor sets a high standard in your mind and body for the entire week of practice and group lessons. You maintain that intention and goal throughout the week. In contrast, those who only participate in group lessons have limited time to move with the instructor, resulting in a weaker sense of how tango should be danced.
Schedule an appointment now. The hourly rate is $50, or you can pay $200 in advance for five appointments within 50 days.
